Winter salt: how to protect your car's carpet.
Road salt dissolves in snow melt, soaks into carpet and dries as a white crust that eats the backing. Here is what works, in order of impact.
SHORT ANSWER
Use liners with a raised lip so salty water stays off the carpet, empty them weekly, and rinse with warm water, not a pressure washer.
1. Stop the water first
Flat mats let melt run over the edge. A raised retention lip keeps it in the footwell, where you can pour it out.
2. Empty weekly
Pull the driver liner, tip it outside, slide it back on the hooks. Thirty seconds.
3. Rinse warm, not hard
Warm water and a drop of dish soap dissolve salt. Pressure washers push salt into the edges.
4. Treat the carpet once
Before winter, vacuum and spray the carpet with a fabric protector so any spill beads up.
